Why this is an Oklahoma problem specifically

Two things stack here. The first is weather: ice storms, straight-line wind and spring hail all take the grid down across the OKC metro on a regular schedule, and every restoration is a voltage event on the circuits coming back up.

While the power is out: use the release cord, not the opener

The red cord hanging from the trolley disconnects the door from the opener carriage. Pull it with the door fully closed if you can — pulling it with the door partly open means the door is suddenly manual and unsupported by the opener, and a door with a weak spring can drop. Once disconnected, the door lifts by hand as long as the springs are intact.

When power comes back, unplug the opener first

This is the step that saves the logic board and almost nobody does it. The damage in an Oklahoma outage is rarely from the power going out — it is from the surge when the grid comes back up. Reconnecting the trolley afterwards

Completely dead: no lights, no click, no response

Likely: Logic board, if the outlet tests good

Lights work but the motor will not run

Likely: Partial board failure or a failed capacitor

Preventing the next one

  • Surge protection at the outlet. The cheapest useful step. A quality surge protector on the opener circuit costs less than a service call, let alone a logic board.
  • A whole-home surge protector at the panel. The more complete answer in a state with this much grid disturbance, and it protects the HVAC, the fridge and everything else that has quietly become a computer too.
  • Battery backup on the opener. Keeps the door working through the outage entirely, which is worth real money the morning you need to be somewhere and the power has been out since 2am.
  • Unplug on purpose. If the power is out and you know restoration is coming, unplug the opener. It takes five seconds and it is the single most effective thing on this list.
  • Know where your release cord is before you need it in the dark. Preferably with a torch that is not your phone, kept somewhere other than the garage.
