My LiftMaster garage door opener is completely dead. Is it the opener or the power?

Check the power first, because it is the cause roughly half the time and costs nothing to rule out: test the outlet with a phone charger, reset the GFCI in the garage, and check the breaker panel. If another device works in that outlet and the LiftMaster still shows no lights and makes no sound, the logic board is the likely failure — most often from a storm surge when the grid came back up. In the meantime, if the springs are intact, pull the red release cord and the door works by hand.

The three-minute power check, in order

  • Plug a phone charger or lamp into the opener outlet. If it does not power up, the problem is the circuit, not the opener.
  • Find the GFCI outlet in the garage and press reset. Garage circuits are GFCI-protected, and a nuisance trip after a damp night or a storm is extremely common. This alone solves a large share of "dead opener" calls.
  • Check the breaker panel. Look for a breaker sitting between on and off rather than fully tripped — it is easy to miss. Switch it fully off, then back on.
  • Check the light bulbs. An opener whose bulbs both failed can look dead while still working. Try the wall button and listen for a click or a motor sound.
  • Confirm the wall button itself. If the opener responds to the wall button but not the remote, it is not dead at all — that is a remote or receiver problem.

If the power is good, what failed

A modern LiftMaster is a computer with a motor attached. The logic board runs rolling-code encryption, soft-start motor control and force monitoring, and in myQ units a Wi-Fi radio. That board is the component that dies, and in Oklahoma the usual cause is the voltage surge when power is restored after a storm outage — not the outage itself.

The good news in that diagnosis is real: a surge takes out the board while leaving the door, springs, cables and tracks completely untouched. The expensive mechanical half of your system is fine.

A dead board is not the only possibility. A failed transformer, a burnt-out capacitor, or corroded wiring at the wall console can all produce a completely unresponsive unit. Which one it is decides whether this is a part or a replacement, and it is a ten-minute diagnosis on site.

Is this an emergency?

Usually not, and saying so costs us the call. The springs, not the opener, carry the weight of the door. If the springs are intact, pull the red release cord hanging from the trolley and the door becomes a manual door: you can raise it, get the car out, lower it, and secure it. Then book a morning appointment without the after-hours fee.

It is an emergency if the door will not lift by hand — which means a spring has failed too — or if a car you need before morning is trapped and the manual release is not working, or if the door is stuck open and you cannot get it closed and secured.

One safety note on the manual release: if you pull the cord and the door feels dangerously heavy, refuses to stay up, or drops, stop. Get everyone clear and call. An insulated double door with a broken spring can weigh 150 to 250 pounds with nothing holding it up.

Repair or replace

Age decides it. Under about ten years, a logic board or transformer replacement is worth doing and the repair will hold. Past twelve to fifteen years, part availability thins out and the next failure is usually already queued behind this one, so a replacement is generally the better money.

The second test is the door rather than the opener. An opener that spent years fighting an unbalanced door did not fail on its own; it was overloaded. Fitting a new unit without correcting the balance just buys a new opener a short life. That is why a proper visit starts with the opener disconnected and a balance test at waist height, before anything electronic is touched.

Can a power surge really destroy a garage door opener?

Yes, and the surge on restoration does more damage than the outage. The logic board is the vulnerable component. Plugging the opener into a quality surge protector, or unplugging it during a known outage and plugging it back in a few minutes after the lights are steady, prevents most of these failures.

The lights work but the motor will not run. Is that the same problem?

Related but not identical. The board is powering the light circuit while the motor drive section has failed, which points at a partial board failure or a failed capacitor. It is a repair on a newer unit and a replacement conversation on anything past about twelve years.

My LiftMaster runs but the door does not move. Is it dead?

No, and this is a different fault entirely. A motor that runs with no door movement is usually a stripped drive gear — or simply a trolley that was left disconnected after someone pulled the release cord. Check the trolley first; if it is connected and the motor still runs with no movement, it is a gear-and-sprocket job.
