What does a blinking green light on my garage door sensor mean?
On most openers the green LED belongs to the receiving photo eye, and it only holds steady while it can see the beam from the sending eye across the doorway. A blinking, flickering, or dim green light means that beam is being interrupted — the sensor has been bumped out of alignment, the lens is dirty, sunlight is washing it out, something is sitting in the beam path, or the wire behind the sensor is damaged. The opener will not close the door until that light is steady again.

How to read the two sensor lights
- Sending eye (usually amber or yellow on LiftMaster and Chamberlain, red on Genie): steady means it has power and is transmitting. If it is dark or blinking, the problem is power or wiring, not aim.
- Receiving eye (green on most brands): steady means it is receiving the beam and the door is clear to close. Blinking, flickering, or off means the beam is broken.
- Both dark: no power reaching the sensors at all — a disconnected wire at the opener terminals, a cut wire, or a failed logic board.
- Amber steady but green blinking: this is the common case, and it is almost always alignment, dirt, glare, or an obstruction — not a dead sensor.
- Colors vary by manufacturer. If yours are reversed or a different color, the rule still holds: one light confirms power, the other confirms the beam.
Fix it in this order
- Clear the beam path. Look along the floor between the two sensors for a trash bin, a bag, a bicycle wheel, a broom, or a drift of leaves. The beam sits about six inches off the floor and is easy to clip.
- Wipe both lenses with a dry, lint-free cloth. Dust, exhaust film, condensation, and cobwebs across the lens all scatter the beam. No cleaning sprays — they leave a film.
- Check the aim. Loosen the wing nut on the bracket holding the receiving sensor, move it slowly until the green LED locks on steady, then tighten it without nudging it back out.
- Check the height. Both sensors must sit at the same height, no higher than six inches above the floor, and they must be pointed straight across at each other.
- Rule out sunlight. If the green light only misbehaves in the late afternoon, direct sun is overwhelming the receiver. A short piece of cardboard or a sensor shield mounted beside the lens, not in front of it, solves it.
- Follow the wires. Staples driven through the insulation, a wire pinched behind a shelf, rodent damage, or a corroded splice all show up as a flickering green light. Look at the full run from the sensor up to the opener terminals.
How to confirm it is really the sensors
Press and hold the wall button until the door closes completely. Holding the wall control overrides the safety sensors on most openers. If the door closes that way and refuses to close any other way, the sensors are confirmed as the cause.
Use that as a diagnostic only. Never leave the door closing on a held button as a permanent workaround — nothing is watching the doorway while you do it.
If the green light is rock steady and the door still reverses, the sensors are fine and something else is stopping it: travel and force settings on the opener, a binding roller, a bent track, or an obstruction in the tracks themselves.
When the sensor itself has failed
Sensors are sealed electronics mounted six inches off a concrete floor, which is exactly where water, string trimmers, and car bumpers find them. When one is cracked, waterlogged, or shows no light with confirmed power at the terminals, it gets replaced rather than adjusted.
Photo eyes are sold and replaced in matched pairs, and they are among the least expensive parts on the entire door. Openers built after January 1, 1993 are required to have a working sensor system, so bypassing them permanently is not an option we will leave a customer with.

Why is the green light on but the door still will not close?
A steady green light means the beam is intact, so look past the sensors. The usual causes are close-force or close-travel settings set too tight on the opener, a roller or track binding partway down, ice or debris under the bottom seal, or a lock engaged on the door. If the door reverses at the same spot every time, that spot is where the obstruction is.
Can I just tape the sensors together and point them at each other?
No. Bundling the sensors on one side of the door, taping over the lenses, or wiring around them disables the only system that stops a moving door from closing on a child, a pet, or a car bumper. It also voids the opener listing. Fix the alignment or replace the pair.
Do commercial door sensors work the same way?
The principle is identical, but commercial and warehouse installations more often use through-beam photo eyes with separate transmitters and receivers, higher-rated brackets, and sometimes a reversing edge on the bottom bar as well. Loading-dock traffic knocks these out of alignment far more often than a residential sensor, which is why commercial doors benefit from a scheduled check rather than waiting for a failure.
