How do I align my garage door sensors?

Unplug the opener, loosen the wing nut on the bracket holding the sensor whose light is not steady, and swivel that sensor slowly until its LED locks on solid — then tighten the nut while holding the sensor still, plug the opener back in, and test the door twice. Both sensors must sit at the same height, no more than six inches above the floor, and point straight across the opening at each other. What you need

  • A dry, lint-free cloth for the lenses.
  • A tape measure, to confirm both sensors sit at the same height.
  • A flashlight, for reading LEDs in a bright garage and following the wire runs.
  • An adjustable wrench or pliers, only if the bracket uses a nut instead of a wing nut.
  • Optional: a length of string or a straightedge run between the two brackets to check that they face each other squarely.

Step by step

  • 1. Unplug the opener. The door should be fully open, and nothing should be able to start it while your hands are near the tracks.
  • 2. Clear and clean. Remove anything in the beam path, then wipe both lenses dry. Do not spray cleaner on them.
  • 3. Identify the steady one. One sensor confirms power, the other confirms the beam. Whichever light is dark, dim, or flickering is the one you adjust — leave the steady one alone.
  • 4. Measure the heights. Both sensors should be the same distance off the floor, six inches or less. If one bracket has been knocked down or bent, straighten it before you aim anything.
  • 5. Loosen the wing nut just enough that the sensor can pivot with light finger pressure. It should not flop loose.
  • 6. Plug the opener back in so you can watch the LED, and keep your hands clear of the door and tracks while it is powered.
  • 7. Aim slowly. Move the sensor a few degrees at a time, pausing after each move. When the LED goes from flickering to solid, keep going slightly past it, find the far edge of the solid zone, and set the sensor in the middle of that range — that is the alignment that survives a bumped bracket.
  • 8. Tighten while holding it still. Most failed alignments are actually good aims that shifted while the nut was being tightened.
  • 9. Test twice. Close the door with the remote. Then reopen it and wave a broom handle through the beam as it closes — the door must stop and reverse immediately. If it does not, stop using the opener and call a technician.

If the light will not hold steady anywhere

When the sensor cannot find a steady position at any angle, the beam is not the problem. Check the wire run from the sensor up to the opener terminals for staples driven through the insulation, pinches behind stored shelving, splices taped rather than joined with proper connectors, or corrosion at the terminal screws.

Also check that the wires are landed on the correct terminals at the opener and that the polarity matches on both sensors — a reversed pair is a common outcome after someone replaces one sensor and not the other.

Direct low sun is the other classic. If the alignment holds all day and fails only in the late afternoon, add a shade beside the receiving lens rather than chasing the aim.

Where alignment stops and repair starts

  • A cracked housing, a fogged lens with water inside, or a sensor that shows no light with power confirmed at the terminals: replace the pair.
  • A bent or broken bracket that will not hold an aim: replace the bracket, not just the nut.
  • Rodent-chewed or cut sensor wire: the run gets replaced, not spliced with tape.
  • The door reverses with the lights steady and nothing in the beam: this is a force, travel, or mechanical problem — get it looked at before it takes a panel or a roller with it.
