This is the call we get most often, and it is also the one we most often talk people through over the phone without sending a truck. A door that opens perfectly and refuses to close, with a small light blinking down by the floor, is almost never a broken door. It is a safety system doing exactly what it was designed to do, in response to something as minor as a leaf or as ordinary as a bumped bracket.

What the sensors actually do

Every automatic garage door opener built since January 1, 1993 is required to have a secondary entrapment protection system, and on residential doors that almost always means a pair of photo eyes mounted no more than six inches above the floor on either side of the opening. One transmits an infrared beam across the doorway. The other receives it. As long as the receiving eye can see the beam, the opener is allowed to close the door. Break the beam while the door is coming down and the door stops and reverses.

That system was not added for convenience. It was added because a garage door is the largest and heaviest moving object in a typical home, and the failures it prevents are the kind nobody recovers from. It is also why the answer to “can I just bypass them?” is no, from us and from every technician worth calling.

The two eyes are not identical. One is the sender and one is the receiver, and they report different things. Understanding that single distinction is the difference between a ten-minute fix and an afternoon of adjusting the wrong sensor.

Decoding the lights

LED colors vary by manufacturer and by generation. On LiftMaster and Chamberlain units the sending eye is commonly amber or yellow and the receiving eye green; Genie’s system typically uses a red LED on the sender and a green one on the receiver. Rather than memorizing colors, use the rule that holds across brands: one light confirms power and the other confirms the beam. Here is what each combination is telling you.

One light steady, the other blinking or flickering

The most common pattern by far, and the least serious. The steady light is the sending eye confirming it has power; the blinking one is the receiving eye telling you it cannot hold the beam. Cause is alignment, a dirty lens, sun glare, or something sitting in the beam path. This is a ten-minute fix and it does not need a technician.

One light steady, the other completely dark

Either the dark sensor has lost power — a broken wire, a loose terminal, a staple driven through the insulation — or that sensor has failed outright. Check the wire run first. Sensors are cheap, but replacing a good one because a wire is pinched behind a shelf fixes nothing.

Both lights dark

No power is reaching the sensor circuit at all. Look at the terminals on the motor unit where the sensor wires land, then at the wire run. If the terminals are live and both sensors stay dark, the fault is in the opener’s logic board rather than in the sensors.

Both lights steady, door still will not close

The sensors are fine and the problem is elsewhere: close-force or travel settings, a roller or track binding partway down, debris or ice under the bottom seal, or a manual lock engaged. If the door reverses at the same point every time, that point is where the obstruction is.

Opener light flashing ten times, sensors look normal

On Chamberlain-family openers, including LiftMaster, ten flashes is the safety-sensor code. It fires for a broken or shorted sensor wire just as readily as for a misaligned eye, so if both LEDs look right, follow the wiring rather than the aim.

The ten-minute fix, in order

Work through these in sequence and stop when the door closes. Most people never get past step two. Unplug the opener before putting your hands anywhere near the tracks, and plug it back in only when you need to watch the LEDs during aiming.

1. Clear the beam path

The beam runs across the doorway about six inches off the floor. Walk it and look for a trash bin, a bag of mulch, a bicycle wheel, a coiled hose, a broom handle leaning at the wrong angle, or a drift of leaves. This is the cause more often than anything electrical.

2. Wipe both lenses dry

Use a dry, lint-free cloth. Dust, exhaust film, condensation, and a single cobweb across the lens all scatter the beam enough to break it. Skip the cleaning sprays — they leave a film that causes the same problem next month.

3. Read the two lights before you touch anything

One sensor light confirms power, the other confirms the beam. Adjust only the sensor whose light is not steady. Half the alignment jobs that go badly start with someone moving the sensor that was already correct.

4. Check that both sit at the same height

Both photo eyes should be the same distance off the floor, six inches or less, pointed straight across at each other. If a bracket has been knocked down by a bumper or bent by a bike, straighten the bracket before you try to aim the sensor in it.

5. Aim slowly and set it in the middle of the range

Loosen the wing nut, pivot the sensor a few degrees at a time, and pause after each move. When the LED goes solid, keep going until it drops out, find the far edge, then set the sensor in the middle of the zone where it stays solid. That is the alignment that survives the next bumped bracket.

6. Tighten while holding the sensor still

More alignments are lost in this step than in the aiming. Hold the sensor in position with one hand and tighten the wing nut with the other, then look at the LED again before you move on.

7. Test the reversal, not just the close

Close the door once to confirm it works. Then send it down again and wave a broom handle through the beam. The door must stop and reverse immediately. If it closes anyway, stop using the opener and call a technician — the door is closing without a working safety system.

The one test that confirms it is really the sensors

Press and hold the wall button until the door closes completely. On most openers, holding the wall control overrides the photo eyes — the manufacturer’s assumption being that a person standing at the button can see the doorway. If the door closes that way and will not close any other way, the sensors are confirmed as the cause and you can stop looking at travel limits, springs, and everything else.

Use it as a diagnostic once. Do not adopt it as a routine. Every close done that way is a close with nothing watching the doorway, and a door that needs it every time is a door with an unresolved safety fault.

  • Low evening sun. West-facing garages across the metro get direct light straight into the receiving lens for a few weeks each spring and fall. The door works all day and fails at 6pm. A shade beside the lens, not in front of it, ends it.
  • Red dirt and dust. Our dust is fine, it is everywhere, and it films over a lens faster than most people expect. Wiping the lenses when you sweep the garage prevents a real share of these calls.
  • Storm surges. A nearby strike can take out the sensor circuit on the opener’s logic board while the rest of the unit keeps working. Symptom: perfect sensors, correct wiring, persistent fault code.
  • Spiders. A single web strung between the lens and the bracket scatters enough of the beam to trip the fault, and it is invisible unless you look for it at the right angle.
  • Wire damage from stored items. Garage walls hold shelving, tool hooks, and seasonal storage, and the thin sensor wire runs right behind all of it. Pinched or staple-punctured wire is the most common non-obvious cause we find.
  • Bumper strikes. A sensor knocked down by a car door or a trailer hitch usually still works — but the bracket is bent, and no amount of aiming will hold until the bracket is straightened.

When to stop and call someone

Sensors themselves are low-voltage and safe for a homeowner to handle, which makes this one of the friendlier DIY jobs on a garage door. The point to stop is not about the sensors — it is about what a stubborn sensor fault sometimes turns out to be hiding.

  • Both lights are steady, nothing is in the beam, and the door still reverses. The cause is mechanical or in the opener settings, and forcing it will make it worse.
  • The door reverses at the same spot every cycle — that spot has an obstruction, a binding roller, or a bent track.
  • The sensor fault appeared at the same time as new noise, jerking, or a door that suddenly feels heavy. The sensors are the symptom, not the story.
  • A sensor wire is cut, chewed, or has been spliced with electrical tape. That run gets replaced properly.
  • The fault persists with confirmed good sensors and good wiring, which points at the opener’s logic board.

Commercial doors: same principle, higher stakes

On a warehouse bay or a dock door, the photo eyes live in a far rougher environment: pallet jacks, forklifts, hand trucks, and delivery traffic pass within inches of them all day. Commercial installations often add guards around the sensors, use heavier through-beam hardware, and may run a reversing edge along the bottom bar as a second safety device. They also get knocked out of alignment far more frequently than anything in a home garage.

The economics are different too. A residential sensor fault is an inconvenience. A commercial bay that will not close at the end of a shift is a security problem, and one that will not open at the start of one is a shipping problem.
