Why is my garage door opener light flashing 10 times?

Ten flashes of the overhead light is the safety-sensor code on Chamberlain-family openers, which includes LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, and several private-label units. The opener is telling you it cannot confirm a clear beam between the two photo eyes near the floor: they are blocked, misaligned, dirty, or the wiring between them and the motor unit is broken. Clear the beam path, clean both lenses, and re-aim the sensor whose LED is not steady — that clears the code in most cases.

What the flashing is actually telling you

The opener will not close the door unless both photo eyes report a clear, continuous beam. When that check fails, the motor unit refuses the close command and flashes the light as a diagnostic code rather than simply doing nothing.

Newer LiftMaster and Chamberlain units also show a two-digit blink code on the small up and down LEDs on the motor unit itself. The sensor codes live in the 1-x group: a wire that is open or shorted, sensors that are misaligned or obstructed, and reversed sensor wiring each have their own code. Your model’s manual lists the exact table, and it is worth reading the LEDs on the motor unit before assuming which sensor fault it is.

Clear it in this order

  • Look along the floor for anything crossing the beam — a bin, a bag, a bike wheel, a coiled hose, blown leaves.
  • Wipe both lenses with a dry cloth. Dust and exhaust film are the single most common cause in a working garage.
  • Check the LEDs. One sensor light confirms power, the other confirms the beam. Adjust only the one that is dark, dim, or flickering.
  • Re-aim that sensor: loosen the wing nut, pivot slowly until the light is solid, tighten while holding it still.
  • Check both are the same height, six inches or less off the floor.
  • Follow the sensor wires up to the opener. Staples through insulation, pinched wire, corroded terminals, and rodent damage all produce the same ten flashes.
  • Confirm the wires are landed on the right terminals and not reversed — especially if a sensor was recently replaced.

If ten flashes continue with clean, aligned sensors

A sensor that is cracked, water-damaged, or dead will not hold a steady LED no matter how carefully it is aimed. Photo eyes are replaced in matched pairs and are among the cheapest parts on the door.

Persistent sensor codes with confirmed good sensors and good wiring point at the logic board in the motor unit. In Oklahoma that is often storm-related: a nearby strike or a surge takes out the sensor circuit on the board while the rest of the opener keeps working. That is a board replacement, and on an opener past about fifteen years old it is worth pricing a new unit alongside the repair.

What not to do

Do not tape the sensors together, bundle them on one side of the door, or jumper the terminals to silence the code. Openers built after January 1, 1993 are required to have a functioning reversal system, and that system is the only thing standing between a closing door and whatever is underneath it.

Holding the wall button to force the door closed is fine as a one-time diagnostic to confirm the sensors are the cause. It is not a way to live with the door.
