My garage door is stuck open and will not close. How do I secure the house tonight?
Try the override first: hold the wall button down continuously rather than tapping it. That bypasses the safety sensors and will close most doors that are reversing for a sensor fault. If the door closes, you are secure and it can wait until morning. If it will not close because a spring, cable, or track has failed, do not force it — lower it by hand only if the springs are intact, then clamp locking pliers onto the track just above a roller so it cannot be lifted from outside, and call for emergency service.

Step 1: rule out the sensors, which cause most of these
A door that starts down and reverses, or refuses to close while the opener light blinks a pattern, is almost always a safety sensor problem rather than a door problem. Ten blinks on a LiftMaster is the specific code for it.
Wipe both photo-eye lenses at floor level with a dry cloth, then check nothing crosses the beam — a stored bike wheel, a trash can, a box, a cobweb. Both sensor LEDs should then glow steady. One dark or blinking means they are knocked out of alignment, which is a five-minute fix for a technician and often free as part of another job.
Step 2: the wall-button override
Every opener sold in the US since 1993 has this: holding the hardwired wall button down continuously forces the door closed and overrides the photo eyes. It is deliberately awkward — you must stand there watching the door the whole way down — because it removes the safety system.
That means two rules. Watch the door all the way down, and never use the override with children, pets, or anything else near the doorway. Remotes and keypads do not work for this. It has to be the wall button.
If the door closes on the override, the garage is secure and this is a morning appointment, not an emergency.
Step 3: if it genuinely will not close
- Stop pressing the button. If the door is off track or a cable has snapped, more cycles bend more track and make the repair substantially more expensive.
- If the springs are intact, pull the red release cord and lower the door by hand, evenly, with both hands. Stop if it feels heavy or drops — that means a spring is broken and you should leave the door where it is.
- Once the door is down, clamp a pair of locking pliers or a C-clamp onto the vertical track just above a roller on each side. That physically prevents the door being lifted from outside, which a manual-release door otherwise can be.
- If the door cannot be lowered at all, secure the interior door between the garage and the house instead. Lock it, and move anything valuable out of the garage or out of sight.
- Unplug the opener so nobody in the house tries the button again overnight.
Is a garage standing open actually an emergency?
We treat it as one, and the reason is not the garage. It is the interior door between the garage and the house, which in most homes is a lighter door with a weaker lock than any exterior door, and which a great many people leave unlocked because the garage is closed. An open garage turns that into the front door.
The garage also usually contains the things that are easiest to take and hardest to replace quickly: tools, bikes, a second vehicle, a chest freezer full of food. If the door will not close and you cannot secure it by hand, calling at 11pm is the right decision rather than an overreaction.
