My garage door came off its track — what should I do?
Stop using the door immediately: do not press the opener button again and do not try to force the door up or down by hand. An off-track door is unsupported on one side and can fall, and every additional cycle bends rollers, panels, and track further. Disconnect the opener if the door is stuck partway, keep people and cars clear, and call a professional to reseat it.
Why forcing it makes everything worse
The tracks carry the full weight of the door through its rollers. When rollers jump out on one side, that side hangs on the lift cable alone — which is not designed to hold it. Running the opener in that state bends the top panel, kinks the track, and can pop the cable off its drum, turning a modest repair into panel and cable replacement.
A door that is fully off track and hanging at an angle is genuinely dangerous. Doors weigh 130–350 lbs. Keep children, pets, and vehicles away from it until it is secured.
What usually knocks a door off track
- A vehicle bumping the door — even a slow tap can pop rollers out.
- A broken lift cable letting one side drop and rack the door sideways.
- Worn or broken rollers finally letting go under load.
- Bent or loose track from age, rust, or hardware working loose.
- Obstructions in the track that force a roller over the lip.
What the repair involves
A technician will secure the door, inspect the rollers, cables, and track for damage, straighten or replace bent sections, reseat the door, and rebalance it. If the cause was a cable or roller failure, those get replaced in the same visit so it does not repeat.
