Torsion vs. extension springs — which do I need?
You don't choose the spring type freehand — it depends on which type your door already uses: torsion springs mount on a metal bar directly above the closed door, while extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door.
How to tell which one you have
- Torsion springs: one or two thick coiled springs mounted horizontally on a shaft above the door opening.
- Extension springs: long, thinner springs stretched along the upper horizontal tracks, usually with a safety cable running through the center.
Why it matters
Torsion springs generally last longer, operate more smoothly, and are considered safer because they are mounted away from the door panel. They are more common on newer or heavier doors.
Extension springs are more common on older or lighter doors and cost less to replace, but require a safety cable to prevent the spring from becoming a projectile if it breaks.
Replacing one type with the other is possible but requires reworking the hardware, so most replacements simply match the existing system.
