Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?
Do not use the opener, and avoid lifting the door by hand if you can. With a broken spring the door is no longer counterbalanced, so it carries its full 150 to 300 pound weight — heavy enough to injure someone and to burn out an opener that was never sized to lift it. If a car has to come out, get help and follow the steps below.
Why the opener is the wrong move
- A garage door opener is built to nudge a balanced door, not to lift the whole weight of one. Running it against a broken spring strips gears and burns out motors.
- If the opener does drag the door partway up, the only thing holding it there is the opener itself. That is not a safe place to walk under.
- On a two-spring door, forcing a cycle with one spring broken loads the surviving spring past its rating and can break it too.
If you absolutely have to get a car out
- Make sure nobody — especially children and pets — is standing in or near the doorway.
- Pull the red emergency release cord only with the door fully closed. Pulling it on a partly open door lets the full weight drop.
- Get at least one other adult. This is a two-person lift, and often more on a double door.
- Lift evenly from both sides using your legs, and stop if it does not move — an off-track or cable-tangled door will not lift no matter how hard you pull.
- Once it is up, clamp locking pliers onto the track just under a roller on both sides so the door physically cannot come down while you drive out.
- Lower it the same way, with the same people, and leave it closed until it is repaired.
When not to try at all
If the door is stuck partway open, leave it. A partly open door with a broken spring is the single most dangerous state a garage door gets into, and getting under it to push is how people get hurt.
If a lift cable has snapped or come off its drum, or if the door is sitting crooked in the opening, do not lift it. The door can twist out of the tracks and come down on one side.
If your door has extension springs with no safety cable, stay clear of the tracks entirely until a technician has been out.
Waiting a few hours for a same-day repair is almost always the better answer than getting the car out today. The car is replaceable; the person lifting the door is not.
