Door off its tracks
- How you know:
- Visible gap between roller and track, door sitting crooked, grinding on the way up.
- Typical cost:
- Quoted after inspection — depends on whether rollers, hinges, or track sections bent.
- How urgent:
- Stop using the door immediately and call. Forcing it bends more track.
Opener failure
- How you know:
- Remote and wall button both dead, motor hums with no movement, or the gear makes a grinding sound.
- Typical cost:
- Repair vs. replace decision — a 15+ year old opener is usually worth replacing.
- How urgent:
- Not an emergency if the door still opens manually via the red release cord.
Photo-eye / sensor fault
- How you know:
- Door closes partway then reverses, opener light blinks a set number of times.
- Typical cost:
- Often a realignment or lens cleaning — the cheapest call on this list.
- How urgent:
- Low. Try cleaning both lenses first; the fix is frequently free.
Frayed or snapped lift cable
- How you know:
- Door hangs at an angle, cable visibly slack or spooled off the drum.
- Typical cost:
- Quoted after inspection; usually paired with a spring service.
- How urgent:
- Same day. A snapped cable puts the whole load on one side.
What You Can Check Before You Call
Two of the five failures above are frequently homeowner-fixable, and it costs you nothing to rule them out first:
- Sensors.Wipe both photo-eye lenses at floor level and confirm both LEDs glow steady, not blinking. A spider web or a stored bike wheel breaking the beam accounts for a real share of “my door won’t close” calls.
- Power and remote. Try the wall button. If the wall button works and the remote does not, it is a remote or keypad problem, not a door problem.
What you should not attempt: anything involving springs or cables. Those are under enough tension to cause serious injury, and it is the one category where a DIY attempt reliably costs more than the original repair would have. See why spring repair is not a DIY job.
