A door sitting closed on the floor with a broken spring is stable. Do not try to lift it to check, and do not pull the red release cord on a door that is partly open.
4. Keep clear of the springs and cables
The surviving spring and both lift cables still hold tension. Nobody should loosen a set screw, a winding cone, or a bottom bracket.
5. Photograph the spring bar and call

Once the door is safe, the rest of the job comes down to four choices. None of them is complicated, but hearing them for the first time from a technician standing in your garage is a bad way to make them.
Decision 1: Tonight, or first thing in the morning?
The honest answer is usually morning. The repair costs the same at any hour, but after-hours calls add a service fee, and a closed door with a broken spring does not get worse overnight as long as nobody runs it.
It becomes a tonight call when a car you need before morning is trapped inside, when the door is stuck partway open and the house cannot be secured, or when the door is hanging crooked with a cable off its drum. In any of those cases, the fee is worth paying.
Decision 2: Replace one spring, or both?
If your door has two torsion springs, replace both. They were installed the same day and have done the same number of cycles, so the survivor is typically weeks or months from breaking.
